Staff Pick of the Week!

This week's pick is Spelldown: The Big-Time Dreams of a Small-Town Word Whiz by Karen Luddy (YA LUDDY).

Eighth-grader Karlene Bridges is a fantastic speller - she can spell just about any word you can find in the dictionary. Her only problem is, every time she enters a spelling bee she always manages to goof up during the last round. And now her sister Gloria Jean is marrying "El Creepo," her dad's drinking is getting worse, and she just might be attracted to her best friend, Billy Ray. But then Mrs. Harrison, Karlene's new Latin teacher, enters the scene. She tutors Karlene for the next spelling bee and shows her a new side to family when she allows Karlene to babysit for her. At Mrs. Harrison's house, there is peace and quiet, her children are far more well behaved than Karlene's younger siblings, and it's apparent there's more money for extras than in Karlene's household. Will Mrs. Harrison's assistance and encouragement help Karlene have what it takes to win the National Spelling Bee?

Staff Pick of the Week!

This week's pick is Lemonade Mouth by Mark Peter Hughes (YA HUGHES).

5 high school misfits ...

Wen: An unfortunate mishap during a class presentation has the entire school laughing at him.

Stella: This rebel with a cause is continually silenced with detention.

Charlie: A misplaced spitball and the voice of a dead twin brother in his ear leaves Charlie with few opportunities to achieve coolness.

Mo: Mo has her life completely planned out, but a boyfriend from the popular crowd doesn’t help the situation.

Olivia: A shy transfer from an alternative school, Olivia’s only crime is skipping class to avoid regurgitating “important points” of her favorite book on a pop quiz.

An eccentric music teacher ...

Only Mrs. Reznik thought they had a shot at anything more than making idiots out of themselves. Banished to the basement after the music program experienced major funding cuts, Mrs. Reznik refuses to allow both herself and Lemonade Mouth to be sidelined.

And a jingle on the radio.

It was a chance incident. Mrs. Reznik had stepped outside the room when it happened. But somehow, Wen’s trumpet, Stella’s encounter with a ukelele, Charlie’s drumming instincts, Mo’s bass, and Olivia’s voice came together in a way nobody could have imagined.

Staff Pick of the Week!

This week's pick is Anahita's Woven Riddle by Meghan Nuttall Sayres (YA SAYRES).

A young woman weaver ... a riddle ... and four suitors. Who will Anahita choose? The self-important khan who makes the major decisions for her tribe? The shepherd she’s known her whole life? The young scholar who wishes to teach her of his world? Or the prince raised as a nomad like herself?

And which man will accept her hand in marriage? Will the khan, the man she does not want to marry, get his way? Will her childhood friend have a chance to solve her riddle while his parents refuse to ask for Anahita’s hand? Will Reza’s teachings reach Anahita’s heart? Will Arash be able to find Anahita after their chance meetings in the marketplace?

And will the Iranian nomadic life as Anahita knows it remain the same? While Anahita is concentrating on weaving her wedding carpet and choosing the riddle her suitors must solve, she realizes that her way of life is changing. Synthetic dyes have been introduced into the marketplace. There is talk of instituting a Western-style government in Iran and of curtailing the rights of the nomadic tribes. The khan, instead of protecting Anahita’s tribe, manipulates his people to gain his own ends. Will Anahita's tribe survive these changes?

Find the answers to these questions in Anahita's Woven Riddle.
