Like most fifteen-year-olds Miranda is preoccupied with school and her social life. So, when scientists start making a big deal about an asteroid about to collide with the Moon she pays little attention and is more annoyed than anything because the once in a lifetime event only means more homework, or so she thinks. However, the world drastically changes after the asteroid’s impact, because it knocks the Moon out of its orbit and closer to Earth. This event has catastrophic consequences, including tsunamis, earthquakes, widespread famine and disease epidemics. Miranda chronicles the events that follow the collision and her struggle for survival in journal format in this gripping novel.

Seventeen-year-old, Colin Singleton, has dated 19 girls named Katherine and number 19 just dumped him! She was “the one”, or so he thought, and now she’s gone and he’s miserable. In order to cheer him up, his best friend Hassan decides to take him on a road trip. However, while Hassan tries to have fun, Colin tries to figure out what went wrong with K-19 and how he can get her back; which drives Hassan crazy and puts a strain on their friendship. The boys’ trip and lives change drastically, though, when they meet a girl named Lindsey in Tennessee. With her help they get tangled up in a series of hilarious adventures, meet new and interesting people and learn valuable lessons about love, friendship and life.

Lulu lives two separate lives: most of the time she's with her mom in Manhattan, living the life a private school society girl, but the rest of the time she's hanging out with her dad, playing poker and learning about what New York has to offer outside of Manhattan. Lulu likes both of her lives, although she definitely feels more of an affinity for her dad's way of doing things. But when her uptown friend Dack gets himself in a bit of trouble and finds himself owing money to the wrong people, Lulu knows she needs to use her downtown skills to help him out. Thirteen-year old twins Firebird and Ford Tucker have rarely questioned the life they lead with their father and grandmother in the swamp. Ford especially is happy with his life the way it is, trapping eels with his dad and staying away from the city that is plainly visible beyond the huge billboard at the edge of the swamp. Firebird wishes she could be content with the way things are (as apparently her long dead mother was), but finds herself wanting more, wanting to see what's beyond the billboard. And even though she knows she's not supposed to talk to strangers, she finds herself inexplicably drawn into a conversation with a woman from the city. And when she follows her grandmother out of the swamp for the first time one night, she soon understands her whole life as she has known it is about to change.

This week's pick is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie (YA ALEXIE).

Junior's life has never been easy - born with brain damage, he's always been the target for teasing due to his strange looks, stutter, and lisp. But Junior isn't stupid - he's actually very smart, and knows after the first day of high school that it's time to get off the rez - the Spokane Indian reservation he's lived on his whole life. When he decides to go to the all-white school in a nearby town the entire reservation (except for his family but including his best friend) turns on him, and the kids at his new school don't really like him either. Still, things are working out better than Junior expected and he starts to hope that he will make it in the outside world, until tragedy strikes - not once but several times. Will Junior be able to work through his pain and continue to keep hoping?

When you're in trouble, who do you turn to? Your best friend, of course. Barry and Alby have been best friends for forever, so when Alby owes more than a little too much money to Ciro, the high school poker champ, he turns to Barry for help. But Barry has troubles of his own - his father died recently of cancer and his mom is having a hard time making ends meet. This week's pick is Dream Factory by Brad Barkley & Heather Hepler (YA BARKLEY).

Disney World is supposedly the "happiest place on Earth," but as Luke and Ella soon find out, it is anything but. Hired for the summer to replace striking Disney cast members, Ella as Cinderella and Luke as Dale (as in Chip and Dale), the two teenagers grow tired of marrying Prince Charming every day (in Ella's case) and hanging out with Chip (in Luke's case). But Chip is played by Cassie, Luke's current girlfriend, and Prince Charming is Mark (or was it Matt?), a totally cute and completely forgettable Disney devotee. For the moment, it appears Luke and Ella are stuck in their respective roles. But management has devised a way to boost the summer replacement cast's increasingly sagging morale - a scavenger hunt of all things Disney. This week's pick is Ophelia: a Novel by Lisa Klein (YA KLEIN).

For everyone who knows the story of Hamlet and Ophelia, here is a retelling that takes the story much farther than Shakespeare ever did. Born in 1585 to a fairly poor family, Ophelia spends much of her childhood chasing after her brother Laertes and playing the part of the tomboy. But when her father gains favor at court, Ophelia and Laertes are taken to live with him at Elsinore Castle, and it is there that Ophelia is noticed by Queen Gertrude. At first Ophelia is snubbed by the other ladies-in-waiting and feels stifled by the strict rules that govern women's behavior at court, but in time she becomes one of the queen's closest confidants. The queen respects her thirst for knowledge and supplies her with books and opportunities for learning. As Ophelia grows older she is also noticed by Prince Hamlet, but due to their differences in rank (he is royalty and she is the lowliest lady-in-waiting), they must meet in secret. She finds herself falling in love with Hamlet, and begins to dream of a life where they could be together. But then tragedy strikes - the king is murdered and Hamlet is not only thrown into the deepest grief, but becomes possessed with the desire for revenge. Ophelia finds herself drawn more and more into Hamlet's madness. Will she be able to save herself before Hamlet reaches his breaking point?

Joey is convinced he's met the love of his life at an athletic awards ceremony, but when he is embarrassed by Coach Puddlefield right in front of her, Joey retreats to the treehouse in his backyard and refuses to come down. It is up to Ronnie to track down Jessica, convince her to fall in love with Joey, and together perhaps they can convince Joey he is not a chimp. Along the way Joey meets some interesting characters, helps Coach patch up his love life, and realizes his own chimp stage will soon come to an end.

Amal has just made one of the most major decisions of her life to date - to wear the hijab (the Muslim head scarf) whenever she is outside of her home or in the presence of strangers. While Amal's parents have always taught her to be proud of her faith, at first they are concerned with her decision - what will the students at her snooty Melbourne high school say? However, Amal is determined. Of course, there are definite obstacles - the taunting words of the meanest girl in class, the possibility that her crush won't understand just what the hijab means, and the reaction of the rest of the world is not always the most pleasant. And Amal soon learns that while she may have made an extremely difficult but rewarding choice, it is just the beginning of her journey to understanding who she really is.

Jane's family moves to suburbia after a tragedy in Metro City leaves her parents convinced something more horrible will happen if they stay. It will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday and Thursday. Don't forget to come and redeem your reading bucks!

This week's pick is Rebound by Bob Krech (YA KRECH).

Ray Wisniewski has tried out for Franklin High's varsity basketball team for two years in a row, and for two years in a row Coach Malovic has cut him. Ray's convinced it's because he's white, and in Franklin, white boys don't play basketball. But when Coach Thomas comes on the scene Ray's senior year, he knows he has a chance. Yet once the season gets started, Ray becomes convinced that Robert, an African-American player, has a grudge against him due to his race. Still, Ray thinks he's fitting in with the team until his friend Walter starts making comments, comments that Ray's not all that comfortable with. Ray wants to stay friends with Walter and believes he can overlook his friend's racism, but soon realizes ignoring Walter's words and actions comes at a price. Things are not always what they seem, and Ray finds himself confronting not only the prejudices of his community but also his own.

This week's pick is Flora Segunda: being the magickal mishaps of a girl of spirit, her glass-gazing sidekick, two ominous butlers (one blue), a house with eleven thousand rooms, and a red dog by Ysabeau S. Wilce (YA WILCE).

Flora Segunda lives in Crackpot Hall, a falling-apart house with rooms upon rooms, a slightly mad father, and a mother who's almost always gone fighting wars. She's about to turn fourteen, at which point she'll be ready to go into the military and follow in her mother's footsteps. But Flora doesn't want to be a Commanding General like Mamma - she wants to be a Ranger like her heroine Nini Mo. Flora's dream is to create magic and go on reconnaissance missions, not to be a soldier. Mama doesn't like magic, nor does she like deviations from her plans for Flora. But a few days before her birthday Flora takes a wrong turn in Crackpot Hall and encounters Valefor, the magical house butler Mama banished years ago. After a little convincing on Valefor's part, Flora decides it's time to introduce magic back into Crackpot Hall. And when she and her best friend Udo decide to go rescue the Dainty Pirate, what started out as an interesting adventure starts to become a very dangerous set of circumstances.
